The charm of Latgalia that you will discover in this trip, is a result of many expeditions. It compiles unique places of interest, breath-taking views and some very exciting roads, forest tracks, as well as a bit of off-roading. To be fair, you can not even describe the range of emotions you will experience during this trip. The only way to find out about it, is to do it. Those, who have already tried some “Self-Drive Latvia” routes, will know that this is not only a good title. To say that Latgalia is beautiful is an understatement. In our opinion, this is a unique route that can certainly compete with the best auto tourism routes in the world. The charm of Latgalia that you will discover in this trip is a result of many years of work, doing multiple expeditions and compiling the best finds in one route. You could say that you will see and experience the very essence of Latgalia! At least as much of it as you can squeeze into one day expedition. That is why we named this route “Latgalia. Exclusively”. Most likely you will want to come back and do it again.
Truth to be told, Latgalia on its own right is exclusive. Besides, one of the best ways to experience it, is behind a wheel of an off-road vehicle! No, you do not need an off-road monster, a street Jeep or SUV will be enough. It is just that you will feel safer and more comfortable in a vehicle with high clearance. If there is a section of the route, that feels too extreme for you, just bypass it using other roads.
In Latgalia every moment is exciting! You will not be able to take your eyes off the little country roads we will take you through, that wind between hills and groves. Lakes, forests, fields, small farmsteads, so many different churches, cows, horses, goats… that is just to name a few of the things you will see. In this route we have included only the most beautiful and romantic churches in the area. You will also see an old watermill, an abandoned village and its cemetery, places to go for a swim and beautiful picnic spots.
We did not include this only because it is a National Park, we included it, because it is absolutely beautiful, and it is easy to understand why it was made a National Park. Also, both of most impressive places in the whole route are in the territory of this park. The second largest lake and the third highest hill in Latvia. Enjoy it and, of course, treat with respect everything that you encounter on your way – the nature, people, and places of interest! The route is time consuming – it is best to plan two days for it, so you can enjoy it without rush, especially if you are driving to Latgale from Riga or even from further afield.
